Camel Milk for Autism
Camel milk has been found to be beneficial for children suffering from autism or ASD. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a severe disorder neurologically, which targets the children up to the age of 3 years. These children have a low mental development in terms of social orientation, interacting and communicating with people and witness mental retardation.
Protracted research under this topic has illustrated a vital role played by oxidative stress, in the pathology of many neurological disorders which even includes ASD. The antioxidant enzymes play a pathophysiological role in autism along with GSH. Studies have shown that consumption of camel milk has relieved the autistic behavior of children. Its effect on the oxidative stress biomarkers, were evaluated by measuring the plasma levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and myeloperoxidase before and 2 weeks post camel milk inclusion in the diet, using the ELISA technique. All measured parameters inferred significant increase post camel milk consumption.
These findings suggest that camel milk could play an important counterpart in decreasing oxidative stress via variation of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidant molecules levels, as well as the enhancement of autistic behavior as demonstrated by the improved Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS).
CARS is a scale to determine the severity of the autism in a patient. Random tests were done on 3 different groups of children from age 2 to 12 years. First group was fed with raw camel milk, second was fed with boiled camel milk and the third with normal cow milk as placebo. The parents and guardians of the children were asked to include an average of 500 mL of camel milk in the diets for 2 weeks. Initially providing small portions, the quantity was gradually increased to 500 mL daily, so as to avoid diarrhea. Blood samples were taken from the patients after every night and it was concluded that the CARS rating were improved by a significant amount in case of the groups fed by camel milk in comparison to cow milk.
